Growing Lettuce in Pots at Home & Its Nutrition

Growing Lettuce in pots at home is one of the important topics in recent times. To produce vegetable, only the farming land is not the exact place. There are plenty of scope or location in the urban area to produce them. If there is no farming land, yet they can be produced in pot, container, roof or veranda. Actually Lettuce is a salad vegetable. Lettuce nutrition is beyond our imagination.  It contains a lot of vitamin A, B and C. So, it has a major influence as a portentous food supplier.

Soil of the Container

To produce vegetable, the soil of the container must be soft, fertile and shuffle. When the water dries out, we need to care so that the soil does not get cracked. If the soil is enough shuffles, same amount of loamy soil along with organic fertilizer should be mixed together. Generally 4 tea spoons of TSP and 116 gm. oil cake will be mixed with the soil of each container.

Time of Planting

Lettuce grows well during the summer. At the last days of the spring plantation should be completed as the tender trees will grow more at the warm temperature. Also you can grow another variety of it in the cold. Time of growing them will relay on their types that you prefer for cultivation.

Lettuce are mainly of three kinds. They have different planting times, shapes, colors and production rate.

Lettuce of Cool-Weather

Four Seasons (semiheading, red and green)
Buttercrunch (semiheading, green)
Royal Oakleaf (leaf lettuce, green)
Lolla Rossa (leaf lettuce, red)
Tom Thumb (semiheading, green)

Lettuce of Cold-Weather

Brune d’Hiver (semiheading, green)
Arctic King (semiheading, green)
Winter Marvel (semiheading, green)
Rouge d’Hiver (romaine- red type)

Lettuce of Heat-Tolerant

Craquerelle du Midi (romaine type, green)

Seeds or the Seedlings

Growing Lettuce in Pots

If the seeds are sowed in a dish like container, the seedlings germinate within 3-4 days. When the seedlings breed 4-5 leaves at least, the seedlings are planted into the container or pot. We don’t need a vast container cultivating Lettuce.

Planting the Seedlings

Plant the young and fresh seedlings in the afternoon. At the time of planting, the soil of the root should be tightened carefully and softly so that the roots are not hampered or cut off. The newly planted seedlings should be covered with a sack for about 3-4 days. Continue irrigation at every morning and evening and afternoon at the time. Sometime the soil of the root must be loosed for the proper growth of the seedlings.

Diseases

Uproot the plant if they are affected by trunk rotten or top burnt disease. In case of insects, apply chemical with the permission of an agriculture officer. Never collect the vegetable within 7 days of applying chemical. Sometimes the leaves are affected by agarics. We can get rid of such problem refining the soil and seeds before planting.

Attendance

You may notice that various kinds of small birds devour the tender leaves and plants soon after the plantation. Most often they uproot the seedlings as well. In such case, we can cover the pot or container by a poly shed or net rounding all the sides. If we use poly for the purpose, we must maintain a standard amount of hole on the shed to move the light and air to and fro.

Collecting the Vegetable

After the plantation of the seedlings for a month, it becomes suitable to consumption. So, we can collect them in a short time. Thus, following these steps, we can plant lettuce in pot or container at home. The very vegetable must increase the food elements in our body.
